Motor Vehicle Credit / Proof

Forms of Proof Required For Motor Vehicle Credit or Removal 

All forms of proof must specifically identify the vehicle in question by make, year, and vehicle identification number (VIN).

 Vehicle Sold & Not Replaced (Two Forms of Proof)

Receipt from the Motor Vehicle Department for returned marker plates and at least one of the following are required:

  • A copy of the bill of sale. If sold privately and not to a dealership, the bill of sale must be notarized
  • Copy of original registration of the person to whom you sold the vehicle
  • Copy of the vehicle’s transfer of title
  • Letter from the insurance company indicating the date that the vehicle was sold (this letter must include make, model, and VIN)
  • Receipt or letter from the salvage yard and/or dealer showing the date of disposal

Totaled Vehicle (Two Forms of Proof)

Receipt from the Motor Vehicle Department for returned marker plates or plate cancelation and at least one of the following are required:

  • Letter from the insurance company stating that the vehicle was totaled and the date when this occurred
  • Receipt or letter from the salvage yard and/or dealer showing the date of disposal

Vehicle Registered Out of State

A copy of the motor vehicle registration from the state where it is now registered is required.

Stolen Vehicle

A statement from your insurance agent stating the date of the theft, year, make, model, VIN, and that the vehicle was not recovered is required.

Vehicle Repossessed 

A copy of Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles cancelation of plate receipt is required. A letter from the finance company stating the date that the vehicle was taken and that it was not redeemed by you. This letter must include make, model, and VIN.
